Mexicali
Coming soon
Mexicali is a state capital, a border city and an agricultural valley all at once, and in summer it is one of the hottest places in North America. When the thermometer passes 45 degrees the official advice is to stay indoors between eleven and five, and the whole city rearranges its day around that.
Calexico sits on the other side and plenty of people cross to work or study. The built-up area runs from the Zona Centro out to the developments in the south and east, and the valley starts exactly where the pavement ends.
Meal prep here today
Something happens here that happens in no other city in the country: Chinese food is local food. La Chinesca left hundreds of restaurants and a style of its own, so when someone books prepared food by the week, part of what is on offer comes from that tradition rather than only from the usual home cooking.
The rest works as it does everywhere else: it sells by direct message. And in this heat, what time the delivery arrives counts for more than it does anywhere else.

How Platera helps
In Mexicali the problem is not distance but the hour. Between eleven and five nobody wants to cook or go out, and a mid-afternoon delivery is not the same thing as an early one.
With zone, days and delivery window published, you choose by the schedule your summer can take rather than the one you managed to negotiate over messages.
Frequently asked questions
How many days does it last refrigerated?
Three to five days in a sealed container. In this climate it is not worth stretching, and anything with fish or pre-dressed vegetables gets eaten in the first few days.
Can it be frozen?
Almost all of it, and here it is one of the better ideas. Stews, rice and meat in sauce freeze without losing anything; salads do not. If the plan covers the week, separate what goes in the freezer as it arrives.
Is cooking at home cheaper?
At the supermarket, yes. On the monthly total, almost never: you are not buying a whole cabbage to use half, vegetables do not spoil on you midweek, and you stop ordering in on the days it was too hot to cook. And no pans are involved.
Can I start with a trial?
Yes, and it is the sensible way in. Several businesses sell packs of two or three meals for that. On Platera you can see who offers them before booking a full week.
How many times a week do they come?
It depends on the business. Some leave the week at once, some split it into two or three so it arrives fresher, and some deliver daily. Each publishes its frequency, and in summer that is the first thing worth checking.
Is Chinese food available in weekly plans?
In Mexicali it is, and it is one of the things that sets the city apart. Several kitchens include Mexicali-style dishes in their packs alongside the usual home cooking. Seeing menus side by side shows who does.
At 45 degrees, does the food survive the trip?
Yes, provided it moves from the packaging to the fridge quickly and the drop does not land in the worst hours. That makes the delivery window the thing most worth checking here, and it is exactly what each business publishes in advance.
